The way Elzani described her and Andre’s relationship to me in emails, had me thinking back to the romance novels I read during high school. The words she used to describe him as “her home, her peace, her blessing” went way deeper than just your normal love affair. I couldn’t wait to make the long trip to Andre’s family farm in Piet Retief, Evergreen Estate, to experience their story in person.
And what a surprise awaited us! Even though the day was cold and rainy and filled with patches of thick mist, I couldn’t believe how beautiful everything was. Having grown up in Mpumalanga, it was good to be home in the middle of the hills and valleys I know so well and that’s so very different to the mountains of Cape Town.
Their farm is huge though and my mom and I had quite a laugh when we both received texts from MTN saying “welcome to Swaziland!”. We also should have paid more attention to the bride’s warnings of arriving with a 4×4.
We got stuck and not just any stuck. After the couple shoot, in the frenzy of getting to the venue before the couple to set up for their entrance, I probably had one of the worst experiences in my life involving a car.
The fact that it wasn’t my car was probably a contributing factor. And let me just say, that I consider myself a very independent and capable woman.
But at this wedding, I couldn’t run fast enough to find a man. And boy did he make getting out of slippery mud look easy!
There’s a few wedding ceremonies that I’ll always remember as being “wow” and theirs was one of them. It took place on this lookout point on the farm called “the cascades”. They literally stood on the edge of the world with a silver stream running lazily kilometres below them; green hills and valleys hiding behind thick curtains of mist. It was magical.
During the ceremony it felt like we were standing inside a cloud and even mother nature made her presence known with a bit of thunder vibrating round us. Magical.
I hope you enjoy a peak at their big day. It might not have been perfect weather wise, but it was perfect in the areas where it mattered most. A family celebrating love and life and a new exciting chapter for a couple in love.
