A lot of people ask me why I moved to Cape Town. This is why.
When Farzana met Kayum for the first time, she knew that this was the man she was going to marry. She was so sure that she phoned awake her friend to tell her about him. Her friend who usually sleeps until 11am thought that an 8am phone call meant that someone had died. Fortunately not. It was just the start of Farzana and Kayum’s love story. And this happened more than a decade ago.
You see, they have been married for a decade already.
On a perfect summer’s night in December, a 10 year anniversary was about to be celebrated. Approximately 40 friends were hand-picked to attend this get-together under big trees and a crescent moon on a venue I have come to love – Hawksmoor House. They were treated to the most divine menu put together and prepared by Farzana’s best friend, Malika van Reenen. They could not have asked for better.
Elegant chandeliers and twinkling fairy lights were hung in the most spectacular fashion to emphasize the beautiful old house and the amazing setting by the talented team of Something Different.
Farzana bought her shoes while on holiday with Malika to celebrate their friendship. She has a thing for shoes. The Jimmy Choo’s were worn on the flight back but the Christian Louboutin’s were not to be touched until this long awaited day. And then the dress. What can I say that the pictures won’t say itself? That it was magnificent. That it fit Farzana like a glove. That it has this sheer shimery look and feel and when the wind blew it looked like this amazing fashion shoot was taking place. Where some girls have a thing for shoes. I have a thing for dresses. I was in heaven. Period.
The designer is called Verona Dove. She is based in Cape Town and Farzana in Joburg. Together they flew pieces of material back and forth whenever friends flew between the cities and somehow this masterpiece happened.
This talented lady also didn’t hire a co-ordinator. I couldn’t believe how well she planned everything herself all the way from Joburg. Every detail was thought of and almost like a fairytale everything just fell into place. Her makeup and hair was done by Kristy Cochius. Her mom, Soraya Paleker, was responsible for the flowers and Gary Poole was the DJ.
During September they held an intimate brunch at the Cape Grace Hotel where I documented their family celebrating this milestone with them.
This blog post will always be my favourite. I have sat here all morning trying to decide which images to show you that will portray what the day was like. But I’ll never succeed. It was just too special and amazing and I could only wish my photos will portray a part of it.
Some of my favourite parts of the day include:
1. Kayum and Farzana helping each other get dressed. Which was awesome since I never get to photograph this as brides don’t want to see the groom before the ceremony. 2. The absolutely stunning scenery that is Hawksmoor House. Given more time, I would have photographed every nook and cranny. 3. Kayum serenading his lady. The man’s got style and a voice! 4. The men singing an “a capella” song under Kayum’s lead. It was so funny and special. 5. Their Cape Town friends and Joburg friends meeting each other for the first time.
But what I’m most grateful for is how special you guys are. Thank you for being so kind and down-to-earth and just amazing. I will forever be grateful that you chose me as your photographer!
A special thank you to my friend, Lu-zanne, for going the extra mile and holding almost all of my gear most of the night. I had a bad case of Bronchitis and couldn’t move as fast as usual. You are my life saver! xx
